Canine Unit

The Schenectady County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit was originally formed in 1975 with the first full service police K-9 team in upstate New York. This team was made up of a German Shepherd dog named Pepe and his handler Deputy Sheriff Harry C. Buffardi. After many years of dedicated service Pepe died in 1987 and the program was temporarily ended until 1991. In 1991, Undersheriff Harry C. Buffardi trained another German Shepherd named Enrico. Eventually Enrico developed a heart condition and was restricted from the rigors of routine police K-9 work.
