Schenectady County Residents Recycle More Than 9,700 Gallons and 21,400 Pounds of Hazardous Material during Successful 2016 Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Program

Anthony Jasenski, Sr., Chair of the Schenectady County Legislature today announced that more than 900 Schenectady County households took advantage of the Schenectady County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program in 2016.  More than 9,700 gallons of hazardous liquids and 21,400 pounds of hazardous materials were collected during the program. 

“This recycling program continues our pro-active efforts to make Schenectady County a better place for our families,” said Chair Jasenski. “The Legislature is proud of our efforts to minimize the risk of exposure to these hazardous materials by our children, pets, neighbors, and first responders.”

Eight collection events were held from April until November that allowed County residents to bring unwanted hazardous chemicals from around their homes for safe and environmentally sound disposal.  None of the material collected by the program is landfilled in their hazardous form. Flammable material and paint are blended and used for fuel. Acids and bases are chemically neutralized before disposal.

The Schenectady County Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Program is just one of many green initiatives by the County Legislature.  Other green initiatives include solar panels on County buildings and the creation of a Solar Farm at the County Composting and Recycling Facility, purchasing Energy Star rated products, establishing an improved recycling policy throughout all county facilities, creating an employee initiative for energy conservation, and lowering building temperatures and reducing hot water settings.
