Schenectady County Public Health Services Launches Mobile App Campaign to Increase Awareness of Food Resources

Schenectady County Public Health Services launched a campaign to increase awareness of food resources in Schenectady County. At the center of this campaign is a free “Food4Schdy” app for smartphones. While this app is useful to anybody in the Schenectady area, the developers took special care to include food resources important to those in economic distress by including comprehensive information about SNAP vendors, Food Pantries, Community meal sites, and Summer Lunch sites.

A research study conducted by Schenectady County Public Health Services earlier this year showed that many of our residents are unaware of the depth and breadth of resources available including more than a dozen food pantries, fifteen venues for community meals and a hundred merchants that can provide support for people in need. The study also suggested that the demographics of smartphone users in the County has expanded across a wider range of economic levels. Many Schenectady County residents rely on smartphones as a primary source of information and communication in their daily lives.

“Raising public awareness around the issue of food insecurity will have significant impact on the quality of life in Schenectady County,” said Karen Johnson, County Legislator and Chair of the Public Health Committee. “By making a free app available to our residents, we can give them a significant tool to quickly and easily connect with resources already available in the County. To paraphrase the campaign headline, this free help helps people find food fast.”

The Food4Schdy app, developed by Susan Kohler, helps users identify, locate, get directions to and contact a wide array of food vendors, grocery stores, convenience stores, community meal sites, locations where they can purchase produce, and much more – all from vendors and locations in Schenectady County, NY.

The campaign, launched a few weeks ago, includes monthly mailers, bus shelter ads, point-of-purchase display materials, posters and more.

The free app is available in the App Store for iPhone and Google Play for Android by searching keyword “Food4Schdy”.
