Sharps
Why It Is Important To Dispose of Needles Properly?
Used needles, syringes, lancets and other sharp medical objects are called "sharps." Such items must be disposed of in a separate manner from regular waste. This is done to protect landfill, recycling and waste-to-energy facility operators. This waste is also treated differently in that it must be sterilized or burned to kill any infectious diseases before disposal.
We ask that Schenectady County residents who use sharps at home dispose of them according to the following guidelines.
If you cannot deliver your sharps container to one of the facilities mentioned due to a disability or transportation issues, then the next best disposal option is to place the labeled and sealed sharps disposal container in the trash.
What To Do
Follow These Three Simple Steps:
1. Store sharps in a sharps container that you can get at a pharmacy or in a thick plastic bottle, such as a detergent bottle. Keep the cap on the bottle and clearly label the bottle "Sharps" with a waterproof marking pen.
2. When ready to deliver, tape the cap onto bottle.
3. Deliver to one of the locations identified.
What Not to Do
-Do not put sharps in with recyclables.
-Do not put sharps in unlabeled bottle or container.
-Do not put sharps in a glass container.
-Do not clip needles.
-Do not put sharps in the trash (unless delivery to facilities discussed here is not possible.)
